The baseball season is nearly upon us and fans of the pastoral game are no-doubt psyched!
But before the smorgasbord of popcorn, hotdogs and beer starts flowing, let’s take a look at some of the stuff that you need (or at-least desire) to get your hands on before the regular season kicks er… pitches off!
10. Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster 2008 - Have you got your fantasy team sorted yet? Need a little help from a trusted source? Ron Shandler has been aiding fantasy managers with his in depth statistical analysis since 1986. If you’re determined to win your league this year, then this is the one for you.
9. Major League Baseball 2K8 - This game comes out on March 10th and apparently offers “Unparalleled bat-to-bat contact” via the “Swing Stick 2.0”. Hmm… I don’t know about that, but with two weeks to go until opening day, this should help scratch your itch nicely.
8. 2008 Topps Baseball Cards Complete Set (Series 1) 330 Cards – What is it about a nice clean crisp baseball card that always reminds me of summers back in the day? Am I the only one? Ehh… probably. But anyway, if collecting is your thing, then this has to be the perfect way to start the ’08 season!
7. Take Me Out to the Ballpark 2008 Wall Calendar - The 2008 Take Me Out to the Ballpark Calendar highlights thirteen of the most beloved ballparks past and present from the United States and Canada. I was always pretty sure there were twelve months in the year, so I’m not sure why there are thirteen ballparks… hmm…
6. Markwort Speed Sensor Ball with LED Display 9" Baseball – This is pretty cool really. It’s the regulation size and weight of a baseball but when you throw it, it measures the speed (in MPH) and displays it on a small LCD screen. It measures up to 120mph, which should be plenty, considering none of your buddies will reach anywhere near that out in the yard.
5. Official Major League Baseball Game Ball – If we’re talking equipment, there’s no point doing things by halves. Get yourself an official game ball the easy way, rather then hanging around in the stands with a mitt and a prayer.
4. D-Bat Pro Stock Ash Wood Baseball Bat – And while we’re at it, hook yourself up with a decent bat (and maybe some Mizuno batting gloves too). Whether it be at a ball or at a friend, is there anything more satisfying then swinging a brand new bat?
3. Rawlings PL158PB Players Series 9.0 Inch PInk Tee Ball Glove with Ball – It’s a pink glove! Your girl/gay friend will love it!
2. Tickets! – If you’re wanting to go to any of the thousands of games this season, then it goes without saying that you’re going to need tickets. Vivid Seats can get you in anywhere.
1. Baseball Prospectus 2008: The Essential Guide to the 2008 Baseball Season (Baseball Prospectus) – This is *the* book when it comes to baseball analysis. Reportedly read by every GM in the game before every season, it provides enough analysis to feed the frenzy of the most ardent armchair fan.
The book contains (among a plethora of other things) a list of the top 100 prospects this season, a bit on how base running turns into runs and a view on the projected leaders in a variety of categories. It is a must for all baseball fans.
