Britain is Awesome at Track Cycling

Chris HoyBritain has always had a good pedigree in track cycling. It dates back to Chris Boardman over-taking the German world champion in the individual pursuit final in the Barcelona Olympics.

But at the track cycling world championships, being held in Manchester, U.K. this week, things have been getting kind of ridiculous.

The current medal table has Britain leading with 9 golds and one silver (which shmuck got a silver??) 'closely' followed by Belarus with 2 golds and a bronze. The only events British riders aren't winning are those that haven't got any Brits in them. In fact, between them the British track cycling team have also set three world records, two of which came only twenty minutes apart!

Now this is nothing new, Great Britain has always been uh... great at cycling, but even when you take home field advantage into consideration, this medal haul is pretty incredible. The big question is, can they repeat this performance at Beijing 2008?

Formula One is Back!

Phew, the start of February through to mid March can be a bit of a slog, what with only the Six nations to get us through, but Formula-1 returned to our screens this weekend and was action packed to say the least.

Only six cars out of the twenty two that started, finished the race yesterday (Rubens Barichello would have been the seventh but was disqualified). Which kind reminds us why traction control was on the cars in the first place.

It's all very well to demand a more driver orientated F1, but the truth is that these cars are ridiculously fast and Humans just can't keep pace mentally. I mean, two of the guys who scored championship points in this race, didn't actually finish!

Perhaps this was all down to first race nerves in slippery cars, but if the next race in Malaysia has three safety cars and fifteen retirements, the FIA may have to look at back tracking on traction control.

Former Olympic Star Justin Gatlin Tries Out For Titans

'The Gun'Former 100m World Champion Justin 'The Gun' Gatlin has taken part in the Tennessee Titans' pro timing day.

This is not Gatlin's first attempt to break into Football since being banned from the track for substance abuse. Last year he made an unsuccessful attempt to join the Buccaneers.

When Gatlin tested positive, atheltics was robbed of one of it's biggest stars. Gatlin was well liked by fans and media alike and many were shocked when they heard the news of his positive test.

He is appealing his four year ban from the track.

Drugs or no drugs, Gatlin is still one of the fastest men in the world and it would make sense for an NFL team to give him a shot.

Ten Things You Need For The Baseball Season

Prospectus! The baseball season is nearly upon us and fans of the pastoral game are no-doubt psyched!

But before the smorgasbord of popcorn, hotdogs and beer starts flowing, let’s take a look at some of the stuff that you need (or at-least desire) to get your hands on before the regular season kicks er… pitches off!

10. Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster 2008 - Have you got your fantasy team sorted yet? Need a little help from a trusted source? Ron Shandler has been aiding fantasy managers with his in depth statistical analysis since 1986. If you’re determined to win your league this year, then this is the one for you.

9. Major League Baseball 2K8 - This game comes out on March 10th and apparently offers “Unparalleled bat-to-bat contact” via the “Swing Stick 2.0”. Hmm… I don’t know about that, but with two weeks to go until opening day, this should help scratch your itch nicely.

8. 2008 Topps Baseball Cards Complete Set (Series 1) 330 Cards – What is it about a nice clean crisp baseball card that always reminds me of summers back in the day? Am I the only one? Ehh… probably. But anyway, if collecting is your thing, then this has to be the perfect way to start the ’08 season!

7. Take Me Out to the Ballpark 2008 Wall Calendar - The 2008 Take Me Out to the Ballpark Calendar highlights thirteen of the most beloved ballparks past and present from the United States and Canada. I was always pretty sure there were twelve months in the year, so I’m not sure why there are thirteen ballparks… hmm…

6. Markwort Speed Sensor Ball with LED Display 9" Baseball – This is pretty cool really. It’s the regulation size and weight of a baseball but when you throw it, it measures the speed (in MPH) and displays it on a small LCD screen. It measures up to 120mph, which should be plenty, considering none of your buddies will reach anywhere near that out in the yard.

5. Official Major League Baseball Game Ball – If we’re talking equipment, there’s no point doing things by halves. Get yourself an official game ball the easy way, rather then hanging around in the stands with a mitt and a prayer.

4. D-Bat Pro Stock Ash Wood Baseball Bat – And while we’re at it, hook yourself up with a decent bat (and maybe some Mizuno batting gloves too). Whether it be at a ball or at a friend, is there anything more satisfying then swinging a brand new bat?

3. Rawlings PL158PB Players Series 9.0 Inch PInk Tee Ball Glove with Ball – It’s a pink glove! Your girl/gay friend will love it!

2. Tickets! – If you’re wanting to go to any of the thousands of games this season, then it goes without saying that you’re going to need tickets. Vivid Seats can get you in anywhere.

1. Baseball Prospectus 2008: The Essential Guide to the 2008 Baseball Season (Baseball Prospectus) – This is *the* book when it comes to baseball analysis. Reportedly read by every GM in the game before every season, it provides enough analysis to feed the frenzy of the most ardent armchair fan.

The book contains (among a plethora of other things) a list of the top 100 prospects this season, a bit on how base running turns into runs and a view on the projected leaders in a variety of categories. It is a must for all baseball fans.

Chambers Wins Silver, Hearts and Minds of Fans

Running ManDwain Chambers finally had his redemption at the World Indoor Championships last night, coming second in the 60 meters to take silver. Though it wasn't the gold the fans were hoping for, Chambers ran a PB of 6.54 and only lost to the stunning Nigerian Fasuba.

Before and after the race, Chambers made a big show of waving to the fans and showing his appreciation to them.

"I just want to thank the public for all their support"

Over the past few weeks UK Athletics and the media have vilified Chambers but the public has stood by him. They chose to do so despite a horrendous hate-filled campaign from UK Athletics and the joke that has become BBC Sport.

Having previously had a former banned athlete crammed down their throats as some form of hero, the public were angered by the witch hunt that took place over Chambers. Whilst the preening, smug sports presenters of the BBC queued up to attack him, so the backlash on bulletin boards and sports blogs began. The fans hated the double standard and so took to Chambers side once again. They cheered him, they defended him and they were celebrating with him last night.

Congratulations Dwain, we're all with you.

When it comes to Federer, Murray is the right place, right time man.

Murray. Scottish.Yesterday at the Dubai Classic, Scot Andy Murray beat Roger Federer for the second time in three matches.

Does this mean that Murray is the second coming or the only one who can stop the almighty Fed? Well... quite frankly, no it doesn't.

Of the three games that Murray has played against Federer, twice Federer has been the worse for ware. And both of those times he unsurprisingly lost. The first loss came at the tail end of a bout of food poisoning and the next was at his first match back after a very long break.

This won't stop the British media from proclaiming Murray as some sort of hero of course, but then, they kind of do that anyway even when he's losing. It's important to keep some perspective though. Federer is still a class above the field.
