Steven Ames Takes Oral Hygiene Very Seriously

Checkout That GrillPerhaps the brightest highlight from the first round of the Masters yesterday was Steven Ames' ever whitening teeth.

Check out that grill!! ->

Stevens teeth seem to be extra white this year, proving once again that too much oral hygiene can be a bad thing...

Manuel de Los Santos - Remember the Name

The man in the middle is Manuel btwWhen he was eighteen Manuel de Los Santos was a promising baseball player growing up in Cuba, with dreams of playing in the U.S. That was, until he was involved in an awful car accident that cost him his left leg. Most people would crumble under an awful loss like that, but not Manuel.

After moving to France, Mr Santos took up Golf. And when I say 'took up' I mean, 'started kicking ass at'.

Here is a video of Manuel hitting the kind of shots that most amateur golfers can only dream of. And doing it on one leg, ofcourse.

This year Santos will be competing on the European circuit against able bodied golfers from around the world. He has every chance of beating them all too.

Britain is Awesome at Track Cycling

Chris HoyBritain has always had a good pedigree in track cycling. It dates back to Chris Boardman over-taking the German world champion in the individual pursuit final in the Barcelona Olympics.

But at the track cycling world championships, being held in Manchester, U.K. this week, things have been getting kind of ridiculous.

The current medal table has Britain leading with 9 golds and one silver (which shmuck got a silver??) 'closely' followed by Belarus with 2 golds and a bronze. The only events British riders aren't winning are those that haven't got any Brits in them. In fact, between them the British track cycling team have also set three world records, two of which came only twenty minutes apart!

Now this is nothing new, Great Britain has always been uh... great at cycling, but even when you take home field advantage into consideration, this medal haul is pretty incredible. The big question is, can they repeat this performance at Beijing 2008?

Ten Things You Need For The Baseball Season

Prospectus! The baseball season is nearly upon us and fans of the pastoral game are no-doubt psyched!

But before the smorgasbord of popcorn, hotdogs and beer starts flowing, let’s take a look at some of the stuff that you need (or at-least desire) to get your hands on before the regular season kicks er… pitches off!

10. Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster 2008 - Have you got your fantasy team sorted yet? Need a little help from a trusted source? Ron Shandler has been aiding fantasy managers with his in depth statistical analysis since 1986. If you’re determined to win your league this year, then this is the one for you.

9. Major League Baseball 2K8 - This game comes out on March 10th and apparently offers “Unparalleled bat-to-bat contact” via the “Swing Stick 2.0”. Hmm… I don’t know about that, but with two weeks to go until opening day, this should help scratch your itch nicely.

8. 2008 Topps Baseball Cards Complete Set (Series 1) 330 Cards – What is it about a nice clean crisp baseball card that always reminds me of summers back in the day? Am I the only one? Ehh… probably. But anyway, if collecting is your thing, then this has to be the perfect way to start the ’08 season!

7. Take Me Out to the Ballpark 2008 Wall Calendar - The 2008 Take Me Out to the Ballpark Calendar highlights thirteen of the most beloved ballparks past and present from the United States and Canada. I was always pretty sure there were twelve months in the year, so I’m not sure why there are thirteen ballparks… hmm…

6. Markwort Speed Sensor Ball with LED Display 9" Baseball – This is pretty cool really. It’s the regulation size and weight of a baseball but when you throw it, it measures the speed (in MPH) and displays it on a small LCD screen. It measures up to 120mph, which should be plenty, considering none of your buddies will reach anywhere near that out in the yard.

5. Official Major League Baseball Game Ball – If we’re talking equipment, there’s no point doing things by halves. Get yourself an official game ball the easy way, rather then hanging around in the stands with a mitt and a prayer.

4. D-Bat Pro Stock Ash Wood Baseball Bat – And while we’re at it, hook yourself up with a decent bat (and maybe some Mizuno batting gloves too). Whether it be at a ball or at a friend, is there anything more satisfying then swinging a brand new bat?

3. Rawlings PL158PB Players Series 9.0 Inch PInk Tee Ball Glove with Ball – It’s a pink glove! Your girl/gay friend will love it!

2. Tickets! – If you’re wanting to go to any of the thousands of games this season, then it goes without saying that you’re going to need tickets. Vivid Seats can get you in anywhere.

1. Baseball Prospectus 2008: The Essential Guide to the 2008 Baseball Season (Baseball Prospectus) – This is *the* book when it comes to baseball analysis. Reportedly read by every GM in the game before every season, it provides enough analysis to feed the frenzy of the most ardent armchair fan.

The book contains (among a plethora of other things) a list of the top 100 prospects this season, a bit on how base running turns into runs and a view on the projected leaders in a variety of categories. It is a must for all baseball fans.

Ski Fans - Underrated

I managed to catch some World Cup Skiing this weekend (I don't know why) and I was stunned by the dedication some of these ski-fans have.

I mean, I'd always assumed that they were all nuts anyway, but actually watching them stand around on the side of a mountain for five plus hours... in a blizzard... for barely a glimpse of the competitors crossing the line... was something else.

Apparently whilst the slalom was going on, some Croatian fans climbed up the sides of the course to pelt a rival competitor with snowballs as she took to her second run. She had a chance to beat the home favorite you see... and that must not happen.

It's pretty mental really. I defy anyone to say that these guys, with their cowbells and airhorns and funny get-ups, are not some of the most hardy and dedicated fans in the world.

Here's a short compilation of bad ski-starts. (which is humorous for much more then just the accent of the presenter!)

Top Ten Sports Films From The Last Decade

Bring It On!Here is the list of top ten sports films made in the last decade. Don’t come whining to me because there’s no Rocky or no The Bad News Bears Go To Japan, both those films were made in the 70’s and so don’t meet the requirements. Jerry Maguire also just misses out because it was made in ’97. And because it sucked.

And yeah, Varsity Blues didn’t make the list either whip cream bikini or no whip cream bikini.

So, in reverse order:

10. The Rookie (2002) - Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffiths
The Rookie is a Disney film. That tells you all you need to know. It’s not a bad film at all, but in short, this film does exactly what it says on the tin.

9. One Day in September (2000) - Documentary
Technically this film is more about what surrounds sport then the actual sport itself. It is the story of the 1972 hostage situation that took place during the Olympic Games in Munich. It is a harrowing watch, but also an exceptionally interesting one.

8. The Hurricane (1999) – Denzel Washington
In many ways the story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter has not been given the attention it is due. This film however, lays it all out for us in an ‘impossible to ignore’ fashion. Denzel Washington puts in an incredible performance and shines throughout this sad but inspiring tale.

7. Any Given Sunday (1999) – Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx
Pipe down I don’t want to hear it. People love to rag on this film but what they often miss is what this film was all about. Any Given Sunday is to Football what Raging Bull was to Boxing. No other film has ever captured what it’s actually like on the field as well as this one. It’s a fast paced, realistic tale of life in Pro football.

6. Bring It On (2000) – Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku
I fail to see how any guy can not like this film. Seriously, Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku playing cheerleaders with attitude, what’s not to like about that? If you’re ready to turn your brain off and have some fun, then Bring It On is a great film. And did you know how many cheerleading squads have popped up around the world since this film came out? Several thousand at-least.

5.61* (2001) - Barry Pepper, Thomas Jane
61* was originally made for TV but such was it’s beautiful story telling, directed by Billy Crystal, that it has fast become a DVD hit. Yankee fans will obviously love it, but any baseball fan, even a Yankee hater, will revel in its historic tale.

4. Remember the Titans (2000) – Denzel Washington, Will Patton
The second outing for Washington in this list, but in less of a vehicle role this time. The beauty of Remember the Titans is in it’s true story, which is one of the real life examples of how sport can conquer all. All at once inspiring, uplifting and well crafted, this film is certain to impress.

3. Rounders (1998) – Matt Damon, Edward Norton
Why is a film about poker so high on a top ten sports films list? It’s simple; Rounders was a film that created a sport. Ok, poker had been around a while but before this film it was grossly miss-understood. Poker’s representation in films was flowery and filled with unrealistic royal flushes and four of a kind aces (think Maverick) and it’s image was quaint. Rounders single-handedly changed all that and gave ESPN something to show relentlessly at every hour of the day.

2. Million Dollar Baby (2004) – Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank
The ‘best film since’ moniker is often a damning form of praise, but in this case it is a compliment that rings true. Million Dollar Baby really is the best boxing film since Raging Bull. The very few people that don’t like this film tend to be those who need their entertainment ‘dumbed-down’. Underneath Million Dollar Baby is a complex story, but it’s also a very rewarding one.

1. Friday Night Lights (2004) - Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, Derek Luke
The first time I watched FNL I thought it was a ‘pretty good’ movie. Then I watched the DVD extras and my eyes opened. The casting for this movie is better then any I have ever seen. Each (at the time) relatively unknown actor is not only exceptionally talented, but also remarkably similar in many ways to the real life players.

Watching those extras, seeing the guys behind the story, made me realise just what kind of effect intense High School Football can have on the young guys who take part. Not only is it their hopes and dreams on the line, but it’s also those of their parents and their peers and the people they buy their sodas from. And this film analyses that situation perfectly.

In my opinion FNL is the best sports film made in recent times. Well worth watching.

This Is All My Fault...

standings_suck.jpg

Have I missed something? Have I slipped into some kind of extra special circle of hell reserved especially for Miamians? Is Miamians even a word?

Well, to put it bluntly, yes, yes and yes (Actually, the jury's still out on the third one, but screw it) and it's all my fault. I'm so, so sorry.

You see, what happened was, I was dating this very nice young lady (that's 'Hot Chick' for all you guys out there) from Boston last year. I'd met her when she was on holiday in Miami and though her accent had bothered me at first, you don't look at listen to the mantle piece when your stoking the fire do you? Or something.

Anyways, in late June I went up to visit her. It was during this short visit that I made two grave errors that doomed us all to sporting hell.

The first error was made when I failed to chase an accidentally dropped hoagie wrapper, as the wind caught it and blew it into oncoming traffic. I know it was wrong, but at the time I figured 'heck, if the wind wants it that bad...'

The second (and perhaps more grave) error occurred when I was inadvertently caught drunkenly banging my new girlfriends room-mate. It wasn't my fault though! I had no idea what shifts she was working, how was I to know she would come home late in the evening and catch us at it?

So you see, if you were wondering why the Patriots are 17-0 and Boston in general, is winning everything, or why every team in Miami seems determined to prop up the rest of the league - well, now you have your answer. It's all my fault and I'm very, very sorry.

So there, I apologized Karma or God or whoever, now can we PLEASE have a Chargers victory on Sunday?

1-13 Never Felt So Good

Let's just savor that moment again for a second:

[youtube="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfKy4rtexhk"]

CamaREEEEEEOOO!

There were a lot of 'Here we go again' moments yesterday. Up by three with 1.56 left on the clock, Feeley sends the Kickoff out of bounds - 'Here we go again'. The Ravens drive the entire length of the field and equalise - 'Here we go again'. The Ravens win the coin toss for overtime - 'Here we go again'. Matt Stover misses a field goal despite already hammering through three during the game - 'Here we... oh wait a minute... this isn't in the script...'

It's hard to describe the relief myself and so many other Dolphins fans are feeling today. It doesn't matter what happens in the last two games now, we've got our mark in the 'W' column and no matter how small, we've got some semblance of respect back. Today there's a smile on my face. Today I'm proud to be a Dolphins fan again.

Can We Get Past This Whole Mispronouncing For Politeness Business?

Stay away from myNow that Monsieur Fukudome is headed to U.S. shores perhaps we should try and nip this thing in the bud once and for all. If only for entertainment purposes.

Why do sportscasters feel the need to change the pronunciation of some guys name, just to avoid saying a 'bad word'? I mean, come on, nobody refrains from using the term 'Bitch' during dog shows do they?

Case in point - Willie Colon, Tackle, Pittsburgh Steelers
For some ungodly reason, announcers have taken it upon themselves to change 'Co-lon' to 'Cologne'. Like 'Willie Perfume' is really a whole lot worse then 'Willie Ass'... for pete's sake.

Case in Point - Sam Koch, Punter, Baltimore Ravens
Look, take this name and show it to any European and he'll tell ya that 'Koch' is pronounced 'Cock' ok? It's not Koosh or Kosh or Kuch or any of those other silly versions that various announcers have come up with. The mans name is Sam Koch - deal with it, I'm sure he has. It's probably the reason he became a punter.

There are numerous 'Gay' s in sports these days and we aren't trying to change their surnames are we? Let's just drop the whole charade now ok?

This Guy Would Make An Excellent Baller

Sometimes brain operations go wrong in a good way. Take Leonid Stadnyk here, whose ridiculous growth spurt at age 14 was caused by accidental stimulation of his pituitary gland during an op.

He did stop growing eventually, but only after he'd become the tallest man alive at 8 foot 5 inches. The Ukrainian giant now stands at a height just 6 inches below the the tallest man ever, though his parents are both shorties at 5'8 and 5' respectively.

The story goes that Stadnyk rode his bike to work until he became to big for it and had to take the bus... which he also grew too big for and had to resort to his family's horse and cart.  Eventually he was forced to give up his job as a vet after he couldn't afford (or find probably) shoes  that fit his feet and therefore he ended up with frostbite.

I don't know if Stadnyk has ever played ball before but I'm sure the Lakers will be on the phone any day now to offer him a tryout.

Forget Fantasy Football, Fantasy Track Is Where It's At...

With the World Athletics Championships just around the corner, the IAAF have launched a Track and Field fantasy game!

The details are sketchy at best so far, which leads me to believe that they haven't really thought the idea through yet, but with signed T-shirts(!) and World Athletics Tour Tickets on offer to the winners, it could well be worth entering.

I know I will be!

I'm off for an extended weekend by the sea with an inappropriate woman.

In the mean time why not check out Epic Carnival, which has an incredible amount of good sports content each and every day. Go ahead, you'll love it I promise.

Also, don't miss the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, as Lewis Hamilton looks to regain his previous form and get his title chase back on track.

Until Monday then, thanks for all your support as always and have a great one this weekend. I know I will be ;)

Man Utd. Sign Nine Year Old. No, Seriously.

Up until last week nine year old Australian kid Raihn Davis was just some talented junior who scored more goals then his team-mates. But not anymore!

After his grandfather put together a DVD of him playing for his school team, Manchester United picked up the phone and signed Rhain to their youth squad. Previous to this move, David Beckham was the youngest player ever signed by a club, at age 14. I guess they figured that that turned out ok, so heck, why not sign a kid who's barely learned his 2 times table?

Here is young Rhain's er... 'highlight reel':

[youtube="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG47FDenyXw"]

One of the biggest clubs in the world signs a nine year old Australian kid after watching a dvd of him which his grandfather sent to them. Sometimes this shit just writes itself.
